XCDR Info

The default installation of X-Wing Collector's Edition CD does not place the mission files onto the hard-drive. Therefore, you will need to follow a few steps to get the custom missions working.

The default installation sets X-WingCD to run the "New missions" of the Collector's Edition CD. There is in fact two different sets of missions to play.

If you start X-Wing, and at the pilot registration screen press the ESC key, a menu of options should appear. On that menu, there should be a button that reads either "New missions" or "Classic missions".

If you want to play the "New missions", which include the easier versions of the "Classic missions", then you don't have to do anything. If you want to play the "Classic missions", just click the button so that it reads "Classic missions", and then press the "Ok" button to clear the menu. X-WingCD will now play the original missions that were in the floppy disk version of X-Wing (some believe these to be the better missions).

Before you can get started running custom missions with XCDR, you will need this xcdr.zip file.

Now, onto the running of custom missions:

  1. Make a new directory, under where you installed X-WingCD, called either "Mission" (if you have X-WingCD set to run "New missions") or "Classic" (if you have X-WingCD set to run "Classic missions").

  2. Place all your custom mission files in this directory. Create a new "custom.xcd" file in the Missions Directory for the missions you wish to run, using the following format. We shall replace the mission called Defect (TOD 1, Mission 1). We shall use the custom mission called "Darksq1" for this new Tour of Duty Mission. Place the following lines in the file called "custom.xcd"...

    Defect.xwi,Darksq1.xwi
    Defect.brf,Darksq1.brf

NOTE: There are no spaces between the file names. There should be no other lines in the file.

  3. Place the XCDR files (XCDR.com) into the same directory (eg C:\XwingCD) as the X-WingCD executable file (bwing.exe). Either use the enclosed batch file (xwing.bat) or, at the DOS prompt, type in XCDR c:\xwingcd\mission\custom.xcd. XCDR will now load into memory.
    Example: XCDR c:\xwingcd\mission\custom.xcd

  4. Run X-WingCD as normal, and select the mission you just replaced in the ".xcd" file.

In the xcdr.zip that is available from this website, there is a file called "xwing.bat". That file makes the use of custom ".xcd" files easier, by loading XCDR and the custom ".xcd" file, starting X-WingCD, and then unloading XCDR on exiting X-WingCD.

The use of Xwing.bat is simple. Place it in the X-WingCD installation directory (eg. C:\XwingCD). Find the name of the custom mission you wish to play (eg. Darksq1), and add it in the “custom.xcd” file. :)
